The Glen of Aherlow: A Walker’s Paradise

North of the Galtee Mountains explorers will find what is often described as “a walker’s paradise”, the Glen of Aherlow. This lush valley is a hub for hikers offering 8 looped walks in this beautiful west Tipperary area.

Lisvarrane Looped Walks

There are three major National Looped Walks near the lovely village of Lisavarrane, 4km away from the Glen of Aherlow. Carroll’s Loop is a delightful 5km walk, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes to complete (grade: easy). Pádraig’s Loop is a little longer at 7km. Casual walkers will typically take 2 hours 30 minutes to finish (grade: easy). Lastly, the Dolmen Loop is the most challenging of the three. Enjoy a scenic hike along this 11km trail which takes mountain walkers at least 3 hours to complete (grade: moderate).

Gortavoher Forest Trails

Gortavoher forest is located on Slievenamuck hill overlooking the glorious Glen of Aherlow. There are five enjoyable trails to take all starting and ending in the Christ the King car park, grade: easy to moderate. Make sure to take in the stunning scenery at the statue of Christ the King as you journey through the glen.

The Woodland Loop is a breezy 2km stroll, only an hour long. The Bianconi Loop is a slight step up as a 4km trail which takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes to complete. The Rock an Thorabh Loop is 6km moderate mountain walk which takes 2 hours 30 minutes. The Millennium Stone Loop stretches 9km across Gortavoher forest and takes 3 hours to finish. Finally, the 10km picturesque Ballinacourty Loop will take walkers approximately 3 hours to complete
