This walk climbs through farmland into forestry and through an area that is rich in history – both ancient and modern. You will come across Cush Earthworks which contains an extensive complex of ancient fields and enclosures and was excavated in 1932-1934. These excavations revealed that the site was continuously occupied by an agricultural community from around 1000 BC to 400 AD. There are several information panels on the excavations at Cush available to view in Ballinvreena Community centre.
Ballinvreena Community Centre is where this walk starts and it has its own unique history. At the turn of the century, crossroads dancing at Corbett’s Cross, Ballinvreena was one of the main social activities of the area. The dance here became the weekly meeting place of locals, both young and old. In 1972, Ronnie Drew and The Dubliners entertained in an open-air concert which was a marvellous success and the first of its kind in Ireland.
This walk is suitable for all ages. It is all road and trail with the only hill at the start going up through the fields.
