Cahir Castle

One of Ireland's most impressive medieval fortresses, Cahir Castle, was skilfully designed by Conor O’Brien, Prince of Thomond. The castle was built in the 13th century for the powerful Butlers as the family stronghold. Over the centuries, the Butlers considerably rebuilt and extended their stronghold. Today, much of the keep, tower and original defensive structure still stands on a rocky island on the river Suir.

A known Hollywood hotspot, Cahir Castle has been featured in films such Excalibur, The Tudors and most recently The Last Dual and The Green Knight.

On your visit, take a leisurely stroll through Inch field or the nearby Swiss Cottage along the Coronation River Walk (approx. 2.5km).
