Built in the 16th century, Ormond Castle stands as the best and earliest example of an Elizabethan manor house in Ireland. The riverside castle was built by the 10th Earl of Ormond, Thomas Butler, for the visit of England’s Queen Elizabeth.
Visitors can explore the hidden gems of Ormond Castle and learn about the characters that resided on the grounds. Some of the features of the castle date back to the 14th century. Highlights of the tour include the finest stucco plasterwork and the magnificent great hall, a prominent feature of a Tudor manor.
Ormond Castle opens seasonally. The OPW site opens daily from the end of March to the end of October each year. Visitors are required to book in advance.
